Trip #22 (7-day) Sep 23-30, sponsored by Seeker Rods (Day 5)

September 27th, 2018|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We have had steady action this morning with lots of skipjack, small yellowtail and small tuna. But we also have been landing some mixed-grade yellowfin tuna up to 40 pounds. Most of the fish are caught on live sardines.

The weather is tremendous today with clear skies and light winds. David Thiessen is posing with  his jackpot contender.

Hello anglers,

We started our day early by catching a few tuna before daylight and the action continued until after breakfast. The best success with hooking one of these tuna was to fly-line a live sardine. There were a few caught on flat fall lures as well. We’re hoping for more action later this morning.

Here is Biff and Barb M. with their good-size yellowfin tuna.

Afternoon update: We had steady action today with lots of skipjack, small tuna and yellowtail released. But everyone had an opportunity to land a nice yellowfin tuna today. All methods were worth trying: live bait as well artificial lures of various sorts.

Here is Alberto A with a quality yellowtail. We are staying the night with hopes of more chances at yellowfin tuna up to 40 pounds.

Hello anglers,

We arrived at the fishing grounds just after lunch today. There wasn’t much action to start, but we were patient. And as the day went on we had some action on yellowtail, and then right at sunset we had action on yellowfin tuna.

The yellowtail were caught on yo-yo lures and dropper loop set-ups with a live bait. The yellowfin tuna were caught on live sardines. Everyone had a good time and we are looking forward to tomorrow.
Here is Capt Shawn with our friend Ace and his vintage bamboo rod and reel, and a yellowtail he landed this afternoon.

Many thanks to Seeker Fishing Rods for their sponsorship!

Hello all,

Today was seminar day! (Tackle tips and it was not even Thursday. Lucky anglers!) We went over all the terminal tackle options from A to Z. Then we talked about what to do to avoid tangles. It’s always interesting to discuss connections: braid to fluorocarbon, or braid to mono and then fluorocarbon. It turns out everyone has their favorite method! I like to use a topshot of mono which acts as a shock absorber since it has some stretch to it.

Check out our link on Tackle Suggestions page for more on connections: TACKLE SUGGESTIONS

The rest of the morning has been spent rigging our gear and preparing for fishing by tomorrow. We are enjoying the good weather and traveling. The bait still looks happy and healthy.

We had a great day of dorado and yellowfin tuna fishing. Most of are fish were caught on fly-lined baits, poppers, and colt snipers.

We will be moving tonight to better our chances at some tuna fishing. Wish us luck!

Here is a real nice dorado that Robert J. caught.

Trip #19 Penn University (Sept 11- 18) 7 day, The Ridge

September 17th, 2018|Trip Reports|

Good afternoon anglers:

This morning we had good yellowtail fishing for 18-25lb fish. Our most successful method was using 40-50lb line and a fly-lined bait. In addition, surface irons (7x Salas, Tady 45, both green and white, and blue and white) were useful.

Today’s fishing wraps up our 7 day Penn Fishing University trip. We want to give a big thanks to Steve Carson and Penn Reels for all the great giveaways.
