Trip 17 Jerome’s Charter Aug 21-23 (1.5-day) Tuesday AM report

August 22nd, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers:
We’ve had a lot of fun on deck today with some of Jerome’s finest sales staff on board–many of them novice anglers! We found a kelp paddie in the tuna and dorado zone, and found lots of action for the group. We took a quick group photo after we stopped fishing to get the fish cold in the refrigerated saltwater fish hold.

Way to go, Jerome’s lady anglers! We’re hoping to find the kelp for a second stop.

Trip 16 Capt Potatohead Memorial Aug 18-21 (3-day) Aug 20 PM report

August 20th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers: We are headed home after a successful Captain Potatohead Memorial trip. Dick Uranga would have been pleased with the outcome. The trip is definately not the same without him — we all try to have fun at other people’s expense, but no one did that better than Dickie. There were some highlights from today that would have made him proud. Capt Aaron helped Terry O cast without having his thumb on the spool which resulted in a nice backlash. Terry got the backlash out and hooked a nice-size dorado at one of the kelp paddie stops. Capt Aaron and Terry, aka “Fang” are pictured with the final result. Another highlight was Derek T. making poke for everyone,. There will be a photo of that later as well. Nice job, “Sugar Bear”!

This trip’s Sportsman’s Award goes to Dean “Piglet” Benavidez. Dean has been coming on this trip many years and has always been a pleasure to be with at the rail. He released lots of small fish today to help out the future! Way to go, Piglet! He will receive a $660 credit towards next year’s trip and that amount will be added to the total proceeds for donation to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, all in Dick Uranga’s name.

Hello anglers: We were lucky again this morning to find another kelp paddie. Everyone had a chance to land a small yellowfin tuna and some dorado came on deck too. Here’s a group photo of happy people and fish.
More later, we’re still fishing!

Trip 16 Capt Potatohead Memorial Aug 18-21 (3-day) Aug 19 PM report

August 19th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers: We landed a few more dorado and yellowfin tuna this afternoon. We have high hopes of finding another kelp paddie tomorrow in warm clean water. We had lots of fun today with some of the usual antics that Dickie would have enjoyed himself. Check the group photo of dorado (and a Creature from the Black Lagoon at the rail- is that “Twinkle” we see?)!

Trip 16 Capt Potatohead Memorial Aug 18-21 (3-day) Aug 19 AM report

August 19th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We had a little action this morning on a kelp paddie and caught some mixed-size yellowfin tuna, dorado and yellowtail. We hope to find another kelp paddie in this area of warm water. There was a good school of tuna also with that kelp, but it didn’t bite very well. Maybe later. John A. (AKA “Snuggles”) is posing with his nice-size yellowfin tuna.

We’re having lots of fun on deck during the slow times with Terry and the guys carrying on in the “Potatohead” way. (We think we see a pink wig and a possible shower cap sighting in the background of the photo…!)

Hello anglers,

We departed today on our Captain Potatohead (Dick Uranga) Memorial trip. This will be the fifth year of remembering Dick and his legacy with fun, fishing and friends, and donating to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network fund in his honor.

We made a quick stop at the Coronado Islands this afternoon to try for yellowtail and bluefin tuna. We landed a few yellows and lost a bluefin to a sea lion. The conditions were great and there is a sign of fish there. Pictured is Bob B. AKA “Coco” with a nice yellowtail.

Headed south for some yellowfin tuna tomorrow.

Dave N AKA “Kitty” won the first raffle of the trip and won one of Dick’s rods (re-wrapped by long-time friend Terry O- though his new name is “Fang”) and a Shimano Torium reel. Dave put it to good use and caught a nice calico bass that he released! Dick is smiling about this one.

Trip 15 Aug 13-18 Ultra-Limited Load Aug 17 PM Report

August 17th, 2017|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers: This morning we tried for some bluefin tuna and we managed to hook a nice fish, but it shortly came off. We have had a strike on the kite but still haven’t landed a fish.

Hoping for some action this afternoon. Wish us luck with these big fish!

Capt Aaron and Searcher crew

Howdy anglers: This afternoon was full of heartbreak for us! We saw lots of bluefin today and we managed to hook up with a dandy, but the line broke 4 feet from the boat. We’re headed in to turn around for 3-day trip tomorrow.

Howdy anglers,

We had just a little action on yellowtails today:  they were around, but not interested in what we had to offer.  On the other hand, we did get to get in on some “good as it gets” calico bass fishing for a couple of hours trying to hook a yellowtail.  We’re gonna head offshore tomorrow in search of some yellowtail and dorado. Here’s a pic of Bo and Jim on deck, enjoying the weather. It’s really nice to have such a small group of nice people aboard.

More later,

Capt Aaron and the Searcher crew
